In COMG 503 we have been given the task to critique interview conducted by our peers. Before starting the graduate program I used to be extremely hesitant to provide a critique. Also, I used to be nervous to receive feedback on my work. What I have learned from my time in the graduate school program is that we are a community. My peers offer constructive criticize in order to help me improve in future situations. Nothing that is said is meant to hurt of embarrass each other. We all would like to see each other develop as students. If I missed something, its awesome to have one of my cohorts let me know so I can correct it.It is a privilege to receive a critique from my Marist cohorts. I look forward to hearing how I can improve and letting my peers know how that can improve as well. How do you feel about constructive criticism?

Criticism, it IS a hard word to hear isn't it? I have learned however that receiving criticism and acting on it can move me from the spot I am I am in to a better spot. It helps if the criticism is given by a kind person in a balance manner, but I find that giving criticism is a skill that is hard to master.
ReplyDeleteI have improved over time with giving and receiving feedback from being in Mark's class. He offers a lot of good tips on constructive criticism and allows us to practice it in his class often. As far as in the assignments I have improved due to all of the feedback that you all have provided.
DeleteI agree with both of you, providing constructive criticism can be difficult. You do not want to hurt anyone's feelings but you want to do what you can to help them improve. In my current role at Prudential I sometimes have the opportunity to sit with trainees and provide feedback. I found that starting off with something positive, such as what I enjoyed about their call or what they did right, and then providing constructive criticism works best. Thankfully everyone I have worked with so far says they appreciate my feedback and it has helped them learn.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! You're able to use techniques you learn in class in you professional life and vice versa.
DeleteI like getting constructive criticism to enable me to improve. My favorite is when someone says you should do something this way and shows me how to do it better. That seems to work for me and I find that I do not have to play a guessing game to determine what they were trying to tell me.
ReplyDeleteI agree Helen. Straight forward demonstrative feedback has helped me to improve a lot. I can always refer back to the feedback that was given to me for assignment going forward.
